What's next?

By Rhona Parry

It's no secret that we're due to publish the next phase of the review in early autumn. What will inform it? A number of things...

  • the responses to the phase 1 consultation document are a critical input to our analysis, as well as a programme of engagement with a variety of stakeholders;
  • we've held a series of deliberative workshops around the UK, aimed at assessing the public's attitudes towards the future options for PSB provision;
  • quantitative research is underway, measuring the public's willingness to pay for PSB overall, for the BBC, for ITV1, for Channel 4 and for five. It also assesses the public's attitudes towards different funding mechanisms;
  • additional deliberative research and quantitative research assessing consumer reactions to ITV's regional news proposals;
  • further economic modelling about a variety of issues, particularly about the prospects for UK content origination;
  • and lots and lots of internal analysis and desk research...

So Phase 1 wasn't the end of the evidence gathering... there's still plenty to come in Phase 2.

What's this blog for?

This blog is a trial, aimed at engaging a broader range of people in the debate about the future of Public Service Broadcasting in the UK.

Ofcom is required by Parliament to review and recommend ways to strengthen and maintain public service broadcasting at least every five years.

In September 2007, Ofcom commenced its second review of public service broadcasting. On 25 September 2008, we published the second phase of that analysis, which will be open for consultation until 4 December. This follows the first consultation which was published in April 2008.

If you're short of time, you can read an online version of the executive summary of Phase 2.
